iPAD FOR NOTE TAKING AT WORK

If you have been reading the blog, you know that I purchased a new iPad (3rd generation) when it first became available. I sold my iPad (1st generation) to a friend of Alicia's. One of the problems I had with the 1st Gen iPad was that for 3G, only AT&T was available. I purchased that 1st Gen with AT&T capability but soon learned that in my small town I could not get an account. Even if I lied and got an account, service was very poor here. So I was never able to use the iPad other than via WiFi.

With the iPad 2, Verizon was also made a carrier, and their service works well here. I didn't buy the iPad 2 and decided to wait for the 3rd Genration, called just iPad. My iPad does have Verizon capability as well as WiFi. This is what I have been waiting for in order to use it at work for Note Taking. I needed a way to get the notes out of the iPad while at work, so that I can forward them, etc. Our networks are so locked down and there is no WiFi available that I can pick up from my office.

Since getting the new iPad, I have been trying out multiple apps for Note Taking. These include: Note Taker HD, Penultimate, Notability, 7notesHD Prem, Notebook, and Noteshelf. I had a few of these on my iPad 1 and had played with them, but I had never used them at work to actually take notes.

Initially, I had Note Taker HD, Penultimate, Notability, and 7notesHD Prem. After playing around with them, I decided to use Note Taker HD. I used a stylus to take notes, and sometimes used the keyboard. It's layout and menuing system, etc. just seemed more understandable and intuitive to me. I used it at work for a few days, and then I felt it was missing some things: search capabilities and making to-dos. I went on the App store and looked around and found Circus Ponies Notebook would solve those problems. Notebook would search, but only if the notes were typed. If I wrote them, the search would not find them. Notebook also had an easy way to track To-Dos and would keep track of the start and completion dates. Notebook was the most expensive of these Apps, costing $29.99.

I used Notebook all last week taking notes with the on-screen keyboard. I can type pretty fast with just a few of my fingers! After taking all these notes, I wanted to email a few of them to my boss, and this is where I ran into a BIG problem with this App--I couldn't email the notes! If I can't get the notes out of the iPad, it really defeats what I want to be able to do. The other thing I wanted to be able to do after having taken notes this week was to include pdf documents in my notes. Again, Notebook couldn't do this (at least not easily). In Notebook, I would have to sync up to iTunes in order to get a pdf into my notes. That's too hard and something I want to be able to do more easily. Note Taker HD and Notability allow me to import pdfs right into them from email attachments, and that's the ease that I am looking for in an App.

So I was once again looking for the "perfect app" for taking notes. I did some more playing with Note Taker HD and Notability, and decided on Notability. Notability will allow me to search, assuming I have entered the text using the keyboard. It is also a very clean interface. I have copied all of the notes I have taken so far into it, which gave me a good chance to play with it. So far, I am liking what I see.

Today, when I was re-typing all my notes into Notability, I was using my new Zagg Folio, which is a folio-like case that includes a Bluetooth keyboard. I like the real keyboard much better than the onscreen keyboard. I had ordered the Folio before I even had the iPad, and it was just delivered today. Check out the Folio using the link above-it's a very neat concept in a small package.

Next week I will use the new Zagg Folio and Notability to take notes and see how it works.

MY iPAD 3 THOUGHTS

I received the iPad last Friday, the 16th, just as promised by Apple. I have been using and playing with it now for six days and here are my thoughts:

  • It seems much faster to me than the iPad 1 that I had previously. I never had an iPad 2, so I don't have a comparison to that one. Everything seems faster to me on this new one.
  • The screen obviously has four times the resolution of both the iPad 1 and 2. However, without having a 1 or 2 to sit side by side, it's tough to tell just how much better it is. I haven't watched a movie on it yet, so that will be a better test of it.
  • Battery life seems to be about the same as my old one, running many hours between charges. This is one of the many things I love about the iPad. It can run for 8-10 hours without a charge.
  • I have used the camera some and it seems OK. I know that it isn't as good as the one in my iPhone 4S, but it takes good enough pictures.
  • I have read in the tech columns that many people are experiencing excessive heat on the lower left of the new iPad. I have not experienced this problem. I haven't noticed any heat at all.

I don't have anything negative to say about the new iPad 3, which Apple refers to as just iPad. So far it has been great and I am glad that I bought it.

iPAD 3

I ordered the iPad 3, called the iPad, on Wednesday when it was released. You can watch the keynote here: http://goo.gl/gcWvy

It was very difficult to get it ordered with everyone trying to do the same thing at once. I started trying in the morning and didn't get it actually ordered until around 3:00 pm. It will be here on March 16th, and I'll provide more fedback then.

KICKSTARTER

Have you ever heard of Kickstarter? It's been in the press in the past few months, as it is having a big impact in the digital world. So what is Kickstarter? Per their website, it "is a new way to fund creative projects". They believe that "a good idea, communicated well, can spread fast and wide, and a large group of people can be a tremendous source of money and encouragement. Kickstarter is powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands."

The best way to learn more about Kickstarter is to go to their help page here: Kickstarter Help. The quick explanation is this: people come up with unique ideas that require funding and ask you to help them. If they collect their required amount, you are charged. If they don't collect the minimum, then you are chraged nothing. In many cases you get one of the products being developed at a reduced rate since you helped them fund it. It is a really neat concept and there are some very unique ideas out there.

I just started really reviewing and participating a couple of months ago, and I am already a supporter for nine different projects. So far none of the projects that I have supported have been completed, so I am still waiting for my first one to arrive. The first one I supported was CloudFTP. CloudFTP is a pocket size adapter that can turn any USB storage device into a wireless file server, sharing files with WiFi-enabled devices (iPad, iPhone, computer etc.). It can also automatically connect to the Internet to backup and synchronize your USB data with popular online Cloud storage services like iCloud, Dropbox and box.net.

All Kickstarter projects have a video where the developer explains the project or product. These videos are very informative and it's a great way to get a feel for the product and the developer. Some take a very serious approach and some are rather funny.

It's really amazing how many unique and brilliant ideas are out there. Kickstarter allows the little guy the ability to get funding and fulfill his dream. I have been amazed and awed by many of the products I have seen. Take a look, I'm sure you'll find it interesting.

LOCKED OUR LOVE AT LOVELOCK, NV

This past Tuesday on Valentine's Day was our 10th anniversary! Time sure does fly. Neither of us had made any big plans for the day. I went to work as usual and Rose was off, for once.

Rose texted me in the late morning asking if I was going to be busy in the afternoon and if I could leave work a little early. I had nothing scheduled so I planned to leave at 3:00 pm, a little early. Rose said that she would like to go to Lovelock, NV where we could "Lock Our Love". I thought that was a great idea and so we headed off north a little after 3:00 pm.

We arrived in Lovelock and drove to the Courthouse. The chians that hold the locks are behind the Courthouse. Before we could do anything, we had to get the lock. Locks were available in a small gift shop near the Courthouse. We were even given an engraver to etch our message into the lock. I got the honors of engraving the lock. We bought two locks: one to leave on the chain in Lovelock and the other to bring home with us.

After our adventure in Lovelock we drove to Fernley for dinner. It was a fun day and one that we will remember for some time. In another ten years we plan to go back and put another lock on the chain.
